Lens...Yes they do work, very well in fact.
The reason most service bureau's don't like clients using lens is the turnaround time.
The lens effect is one of the most cumbersome of all the features for the rip to tackle,
In otherwards use them sparingly.
Many lens effects can be created in other fashions though.
Colorizing for instance can be done by placing a colour on top of the image then indicating for it to overprint in the object menu.
For very complex collage type of jobs, you can save the service bureau hours of output time. Select all the elements you want,. export them as a tiff, (if there are any curved images select super sampling) image. Then, re-import the elements, deleting the originally placed in objects with the lens. This will save you $100's of dollars in ripping fees and translate into reliable and fast turnaroud of your files.
